The Greener Route Arrives in Basildon
Basildon’s Whitmore Way is set to benefit from a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable bus network through the new Greener Route initiative, delivered in partnership with TravelEssex, Bauer Media Outdoor and First Bus.
Over the last six months, a series of ground‑breaking Milestone bus shelters have been installed along the route - helping create a safer, greener and more modern transport network for everyone. These revolutionary shelters are designed around the needs of today’s passengers, with a focus on accessibility, safety, comfort and sustainability. Each features:
Living roofs supporting local biodiversity
Sustainable construction materials
Solar‑powered lighting
Improved, more inclusive seating
NaviLens technology, giving blind and partially sighted passengers instant access to real‑time travel information
These infrastructure upgrades sit alongside the rollout of 55 zero‑emission electric buses, now operating in Basildon thanks to Government funding through the ZEBRA 2 scheme and major investment from First Bus. The new fleet offers quieter journeys, cleaner air and lower carbon emissions for the community.
Work on the shelters began in autumn 2025, with installations scheduled during off‑peak hours wherever possible to minimise disruption.
Together, these improvements represent a major step towards a modern, sustainable and passenger‑focused transport network for Basildon - made possible through strong collaboration between TravelEssex, Bauer Media Outdoor and First Bus.
