Travel Training gives people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) the confidence and skills to travel independently on buses and trains. We can also work with people on a walking route.
The one-to-one training is delivered on a specific journey, such as their route to school or day centre. It may include developing skills such as personal and road safety and using timetables and travel apps. It may also include money skills and what to do when things go wrong.
We also work with anyone with an additional need and the elderly on DigiGo training (this is currently only available in the Braintree area).
How does it work?
First, there is a home visit to get to know each other. The trainer will then meet the student at home and travel the entire journey with the student. Training is usually weekly and at the student’s pace.
Support reduces as the student's confidence and independence grows. For example, the first stage would be meeting the student at the bus stop or train station rather than at home.
Training is complete once everyone is happy they can safely and independently complete the journey. There is no time limit to training. Some students only need three or four sessions whilst others we will work could be for up to a year.
We can also re-train if they move schools/colleges. There is no limit to the number of routes we can train on as long as they are purposeful to a place of education.
