Rolling out the bus shelter upgrade programme in Colchester
The bus shelter upgrade programme is starting in Colchester with the first new shelters being installed from 24 February in the city, improving the experience of travelling by bus.
The new shelters offer seats, motion sensor lighting, room for prams and wheelchairs. Some will also include digital real-time information screens and advertising panels.
The new shelters are also part of a commitment to improve environmental and sustainability benefits. The energy efficient lighting is 50 per cent more efficient than older shelters and the new shelters are also designed and built using recycled and recyclable materials. The water used to clean them will include harvested rainwater to reduce the need to use mains water.
The upgrade programme began being rolled out in Essex last summer following Essex County Council and Clear Channel UK entering into a 10-year partnership for the maintenance, install and upkeep of the shelters in the county. Shelters in Colchester are now being replaced as part of the programme following discussions and agreement with previous contractor JC Decaux about the removal of their shelters in the city.
The main Bus Shelters in Essex webpage hosts an interactive map which shows which shelters in Colchester and across the county are to be replaced and when during the first year of the new contract. This will be updated periodically and in time will include the timetable for future years.
Around 100 shelters in Colchester are included in the programme, and these upgrades are expected to be completed by the summer. It is expected that there will be a short gap of about a week between the older shelters being removed and the new ones being added.
